C++/Qt Application for an Indigenous Solid State Recorder

Developed host-side operator software for an indigenous Solid State Recorder at ISRO’s Space Applications Centre. The Qt application controls recording, manages files, downloads data, and exposes hardware diagnostics over serial and USB interfaces.

Technical work

ISRO / Space Applications Centre · Internship project

  • Ported a recorder operator console from legacy Microsoft Visual C++ to Qt, exposing recording, playback/download, erasure, and hardware-diagnostic controls.
  • Connected the host application to recorder hardware using framed serial commands and USB 2.0 playback, with file metadata, storage-capacity display, and timestamped diagnostic feedback.
  • Added operator controls for bad-block lists and recorder resets to support hardware checkout and troubleshooting.

Overview

The indigenous recorder stores data from SAR payloads. My work focused on its host-side operator application: replacing a legacy Microsoft Visual C++ console with a Qt interface for recorder control and data access.

This is application and hardware-interface software. The recorder’s FPGA, NAND storage, and high-rate acquisition architecture provide system context; implementation of flight firmware or error-correction algorithms is outside the documented contribution.

Role & Contributions

  • Qt operator console: Recording, playback/download, erasure, reset, and diagnostic controls.
  • Serial interface: Framed UART/RS-232 commands linking the host application to recorder hardware.
  • USB 2.0 playback: Host-side data-download workflow and file management.
  • Operator feedback: File metadata, storage-capacity status, timestamps, and debug information.
  • Hardware checkout: Controls for bad-block lists and recorder resets to support troubleshooting.

Technical Context

SAR instruments produce substantial data volumes, making acquisition and storage important parts of the payload chain. An operator console helps engineers configure the recorder, inspect its state, and retrieve recorded data during development and checkout.

  • Recorder FPGA and flash-memory architecture belong to the underlying hardware design.
  • Host command handling and file/data-download workflows belong to the application developed here.
  • Throughput ratings, radiation tolerance, qualification, and flight deployment are not reported as results of this application work.

Technologies Used

  • C++ and Qt for the host application and operator interface.
  • UART / RS-232 command transport and USB 2.0 recorded-data download.
  • Solid-state recorder diagnostics, file metadata, storage status, and hardware-control interfaces.
